Spotlight Search is a powerful search tool on macOS that helps you find apps, folders, and files.

However, it can be annoying when it doesn’t show you what you want. Sadly, this is the case for several macOS users who can’t look up files from Spotlight Search.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to get Spotlight Search working again on your Mac.

1. Wait for Spotlight Indexing to Finish

Spotlight Search automatically reindexes after an update to account for new files, apps, and features.

If you just updated your system, allow Spotlight Search to finish indexing your storage first.

Depending on your storage and files, indexing can take anywhere from several hours to up to 2 days, depending on how many files you have on your Mac.

Note

  • Indexing should not take an entire day if your Mac has an SSD.
  • Spotlight Search only indexes once after an update.
  • If it reindexes repeatedly, proceed to the solutions below to troubleshoot the issue.

2. Refresh Spotlight Search

A bug or error may have occurred on Spotlight Search, causing it to malfunction or not show desired results.

To rule this out, refresh the service by disabling/enabling it:

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings
  2. Scroll down from the side menu and access Siri & Spotlight
  3. Find Spotlight, and under Search Results, uncheck everything.
Siri & Spotlight
  1. Restart your Mac.
  2. Go back to Siri & Spotlight and check all the entries.

Try Spotlight Search again to check if the problem is solved.

3. Use Command + Space Shortcut

If Spotlight Search does not appear when opening from the Control Center, you can try using the Command + Space shortcut.

You can also try holding the Spotlight icon from the Control Center until Spotlight Search shows at the center of your screen.

4. Rebuild Spotlight Index

Spotlight is a selection-based search system that uses an index of all files on your system to load them quickly.

However, this index can get corrupted and cause Spotlight Search to malfunction.

To rebuild Spotlight’s index using System Settings, you need to:

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings
  2. Now, click on Siri & Spotlight from the side menu.
System Settings
  1. Scroll down and click on Spotlight Privacy
  1. Drag your disk or folder to the list of locations that Spotlight is prevented from searching.
spotlight search not working on mac
  1. Restart your Mac.
  2. Return to Spotlight Privacy.
  3. Select the folder or drive you added and click the (-) icon to remove it.
  4. Click Done, and Spotlight will reindex your folder or drive.

You can also use the Terminal to rebuild Spotlight’s index:

  1. Press Command + Space and look for Terminal
  2. Open the Terminal
  3. Type sudo -i and hit Enter to run the command.
  4. Enter your password.
  5. Now, run these commands one by one:
mdutil -Ea

mdutil -ai off

mdutil -ai on

Once you see a message that says “Indexing Enabled,” you’re done. Test Spotlight Search afterward to confirm if it works.

5. Restart SystemUI Server

The SystemUI Server manages system menu items, including search content in Spotlight.

Restarting this process should address any issues with the software that causes Spotlight Search to malfunction.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open Finder on your Mac.
  2. Now, go to Application > Utilities
  3. Launch the Activity Monitor

  1. Type “sys” in the search box at the upper right corner.
  2. Locate the SystemUI Server process.

  1. Double-click on it and choose Quit

This automatically restarts the SystemUI Server process. Once again, try using Spotlight Search and see if it’s working.

6. Update Your Mac to Latest Version

The version of macOS you’re using might have an issue related to Spotlight Search or indexing.

If none of the solutions above worked, try updating your Mac.

  1. In the upper left corner of your screen, click the Apple icon to open the Apple Menu
  2. Now, click on System Settings
  3. Inside settings, navigate to General > Software Update
  4. If a new version is detected, follow the prompts to install the update.

Note

  • Your Mac can restart several times while installing the update.
  • The update progress bar might also appear to be stuck. When this happens, don’t do anything. Software updates can take several minutes to complete.

FAQs

Spotlight Search is enabled by default on your Mac. You can access the feature by doing any of the following:

1. Clicking the Spotlight icon in the Menu bar.
2. Pressing Command + Space on your keyboard.
3. Pressing the dedicated function key on the keyboard (if available).
The most common reason the search feature is not working on Finder is problems with indexing. Your system’s current index of all your files may have gotten corrupted, which makes it difficult for Finder to find what you’re looking for.
Spotlight Search reindexes your system after an update to account for new files and apps. If you’ve just updated your Mac, Spotlight may not work correctly for a few hours while indexing is in process.
1. Open Activity Monitor on your Mac.
2. Now, access the CPU tab.
3. Click the ProcessName column to sort processes alphabetically.
4. Find “mdworker” from the list.
5. If the process is using CPU resources, Spotlight is indexing.
Depending on your system, Spotlight indexing can take several hours or up to 2 days if you have large files on your Mac. Indexing can also take longer than usual if you have external drives connected to your Mac.

When I updated to Sonoma, I tried a random wallpaper from settings and discovered that it still needed to be downloaded.

Is there a wallpaper engine for Mac?

Yes. There are many third-party wallpaper apps for Mac. One of the most popular is the Dynamic Wallpaper Engine. This paid software lets you use live wallpapers on your desktop and screensaver.

Reddit users confirmed that the wallpaper issue on macOS Sonoma is a server problem. System wallpapers take too long to download, causing users to think that their wallpapers are not changing but it just simply hasn’t finished downloading or has failed to download.

Is FaceTime not working on your Apple device?

FaceTime is the preferred choice for many Apple users as it provides an easy and seamless way of communicating with friends, colleagues, or loved ones.

However, it can be quite frustrating when this feature refuses to work on your Apple devices.

facetime not working

There are various reasons why FaceTime isn’t working. It can be due to improper user configurations, server-related problems, or issues with your software.

Today, we’ll show you how to fix FaceTime if it’s not working on your device.

Let’s get started!

1. Check Apple Servers.

FaceTime is an online service that needs its servers to deliver content and features to users.

If the video conferencing app is not working on your end, there’s a good chance there’s an issue with Apple’s servers.

To confirm this, visit Apple’s status page and see if there are reported outages with FaceTime.

Apple Server Status

Sadly, server problems can’t be resolved on your end. If the servers are down, the best thing to do is wait for Apple to address the issue.

On the other hand, you can head to the next solution if Apple’s servers are fine.

2. Restart Your Device.

Restarting your device is one of the most effective ways to resolve minor issues with FaceTime.

This reloads your system resources, resolving temporary bugs and errors that occurred during use. It also clears corrupted and unused data from the system memory.

Note

Make sure to ask everyone joining your call to restart their device.

If you are using an iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, 14, or later, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Hold down the Volume Down button and Side button until the ‘Slide to Power Off’ prompt appears.
  2. Now, drag the slider to the right and wait for 30 seconds.
  3. Press the Side button afterward to turn on your device.
Restart iPhone

For older iPhones, follow the steps below:

  1. Locate the Power button on your device.
  2. Now, hold the button until the ‘Slide to Power Off’ prompt shows up.
  3. Drag the slider to the right and wait 30 seconds before turning on your device.

If you are using an iPad without a home button, here’s what you need to do:

  1. First, press and hold either the Volume button + Top button until the ‘Slide to Power Off’ prompt appears.
  2. Now, drag the slider to the right until your display shuts off.
  3. Lastly, wait for at least 30 seconds before turning on your iPad.

For iPads with a home button, follow the guide below:

  1. On your device, press and hold the Top button until the power slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to the right until your display turns black.
  3. Finally, wait for at least 30 seconds before restarting your iPad.

If you’re on a Mac, see the steps below:

  1. Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen.
  2. Now, choose Restart from the drop-down menu.
  3. When prompted, click Restart again to confirm your action.

Once done, try FaceTime again to check if the problem is solved.

3. Check If FaceTime Is Enabled (iPhone).

For iPhone users, verify if you have FaceTime enabled on your device.

While it comes enabled by default, changes on your device may have disabled the feature, or you turned it off and forgot about it.

Here’s how you can check:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Now, scroll down and tap on FaceTime
  3. Look for FaceTime and tap the toggle switch beside it.

Use FaceTime afterward to check if it works.

    4. Check Your Network.

A slow or unstable internet connection can cause various issues with FaceTime.

To confirm this, perform a speed test on your network using Fast.com to measure its current bandwidth.

    Fast.com

If your connection is unstable, restart your modem or router to refresh the link between your device and your ISP.

    1. Unplug your router from the outlet.
    2. Wait for 5 to 10 seconds to ensure your modem/router is turned off.
    3. Plug back in the power cable and wait for your device to initialize.
    Restart Router

Run another test afterward to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your service provider and ask them to fix your connection.

    5. Ensure You Added An Email or Phone Number.

You need to add your phone number or email address to FaceTime for people to reach you.

While this is done when you set up your device, it can get corrupted for various reasons, causing issues with FaceTime.

Follow the steps below to check your account:

    1. Open Settings on your iPhone/iPad.
    2. Scroll down and tap on FaceTime
    3. Find the ‘You Can Be Reached By FaceTime At’ section.
    4. If there’s no email or phone number, add it.
    facetime not working

Now, try using FaceTime again to see if everything checks out.

    6. Confirm If Your Carrier Supports FaceTime.

Not all carriers support FaceTime via cellular. If you are not connected to Wi-Fi, check if your carrier allows calls through FaceTime.

While most carriers in the US support FaceTime, it is a different story in other regions.

You can check Apple’s carrier page to see if your provider supports FaceTime or call your carrier for more information.

    7. Check Date & Time Settings.

Like other online services, FaceTime might not work on your device if the date and time are not set properly.

For iPhone/iPad users, here’s how you can change your date and time settings:

    1. Launch Settings on your device.
    2. Now, go to General > Date & Time
    3. Enable the ‘Set Automatically’ option or manually set the date and time.
    facetime not working

If you are using a Mac, follow the guide below:

    1. Click on the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
    2. Now, go to System Settings
    3. Navigate to General > Date & Time on the right side menu.
    4. Enable Set Time Automatically or configure it manually.
    facetime not working

Go back to FaceTime afterward and check if it will work.

    8. Check If FaceTime Is Allowed From Screen Time (iPad/iPhone).

Screen Time comes in handy when lending your device to other people or your child. This blocks certain features on your device, which includes FaceTime.

If you use Screen Time on your device, we suggest checking if FaceTime is allowed.

Here’s what you need to do:

    1. Open Settings on your iPhone/iPad.
    2. Now, scroll down and tap on Screen Time
    Screen Time
    1. Go to Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps
    2. Look for FaceTime and enable it.
    facetime not working

    Note

The toggle switch beside FaceTime must have a green indicator.

Return to FaceTime and see if you can make or join a call.

    9. Update Your Device.

If you still encounter problems with FaceTime, try updating your system.

The version of iOS or macOS on your device might have an underlying issue that is related to FaceTime.

For iPhones/iPads, follow the steps below to check for updates:

    1. Open Settings on your iPhone/iPad.
    2. Navigate to General > Software Update
    3. If there’s a new iOS version available, tap Download and Install
    4. Once the new software is ready, follow the prompts to install the update.
    Update iPhone

    Note

    • Your device can restart several times while installing the update.
    • Ensure your device has at least 50% battery before installing updates. It’s best to keep your device plugged into the wall charger to avoid interruptions.
    • Allow at least 15 minutes for the update to install, especially if it’s a major update (iOS 14 to iOS 15).

If you’re using a Mac, here’s what you need to do:

Try FaceTime again to check if the problem is solved.

That ends our guide for fixing FaceTime if it’s not working on your device.

Are your AirPods connected, but no sound is coming out?

Whether you want to splurge on some nice tunes or watch some movies, it can be annoying when you find out that there’s no sound coming out from your AirPods

This is a common issue for iPhone users. Usually, it’s due to improper device configurations.

    AirPods no sound

However, it can also be due to third-party applications, faulty software, or Bluetooth connection problems.

Today, we will show you what to do when there’s no sound coming out from your AirPods.

    Let’s begin!

    1. Restart Your Device.

Before changing anything, we suggest restarting your device if you encounter problems with your AirPods. This should ensure that the problem is not caused by the connected device.

Restarting your device allows it to reload system resources and clear corrupted data from the memory.

This effectively resolves any errors that occur on your system during use.

If you are using an iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, 14, or later, here’s what you need to do:

    1. Hold the Volume Down and Side buttons until the ‘Slide to Power Off’ prompt appears.

    Restart iPad Home button

On Macs, here’s what you need to do:

    1. Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen.
    2. Now, choose Restart from the drop-down menu.
    3. When prompted, click Restart again to confirm your action.
    Restart Mac

Reconnect your AirPods afterward and check if the problem is solved.

    2. Charge AirPods.

When your AirPods don’t have enough battery charge, it may not function properly.

You can experience all sorts of issues, from low volume to no sound at all. Sound distortion and connection problems can also occur when your AirPods are running low on battery.

Due to this, we recommend charging your AirPods if it’s not playing sound from your device.

Make sure that the charging case has enough battery, and leave your AirPods in the case for 15-20 minutes.

    3. Check for Connection Conflicts.

If you have all your Apple devices nearby, make sure that your AirPods are connected to the right device.

Possibly, your AirPods are connected to your Mac, and you are trying to play music on your iPhone or vice versa.

To avoid problems, disable the Bluetooth on your other devices to ensure that your AirPods connect to the current device you’re using.

Additionally, check if there are nearby appliances that can interfere with Bluetooth, like ovens, video cameras, cordless phones, or microwaves.

    4. Clean Your AirPods.

As you use your AirPods, dirt, and ear wax can accumulate in the speaker grills. This can prevent sound from coming out, explaining why you can’t hear anything.

To be sure, check your AirPods speaker grills. Grab a microfiber cloth or cotton bud to remove any debris in the speaker grills.

You can also try sucking on the speaker grills to remove debris that accumulated inside.

Be sure to place a clean cloth on the grill before sucking it to prevent dirt and debris from going into your mouth.

    5. Check Your Settings (iPhone/iPad).

If you are connecting your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad, check your settings to ensure everything is set correctly.

Here’s what you need to do:

    1. Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
    2. Now, go to General > Accessibility
    3. Tap on Audio/Visual
    4. Scroll down and find the Balance Slider. Ensure that the slider is in the middle.

    1. Restart your iPhone/iPad.

Try playing music on your device afterward to check if the problem is solved.

    6. Disable Automatic Ear Detection.

Automatic ear detection is a feature that automatically stops music when you remove your AirPods. This can cause issues if your AirPods don’t fit well in your ears.

To avoid problems, we suggest disabling this feature if you don’t really need it.

Here’s what you need to do:

    1. First, open Settings on your iPhone.
    2. Tap on Bluetooth and select your AirPods
    3. Look for Automatic Ear Detection and disable it.

    7. Update Your Device.

There might be a problem with your device’s software that is related to Bluetooth connectivity or sound output.

Check if there are available updates for your device and install them to patch bugs and errors.

For iPhone/iPad users, here’s what you need to do:

    1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
    2. Navigate to General > Software Update
    3. If there’s a new iOS version available, tap Download and Install

    • Allow at least 15 minutes for the update to install, especially if it’s a major update (iOS 14 to iOS 15).

If you’re using a Mac, follow the guide below:

    1. In the upper left corner of your screen, click the Apple icon to open the Apple Menu
    2. Now, click on System Settings
    3. Inside settings, navigate to General > Software Update
    4. If a new version is detected, follow the prompts to install the update.

    • Your Mac can restart several times while installing the update.
    • The update progress bar might also appear to be stuck. When this happens, don’t do anything. Software updates can take several minutes to complete.

Connect your AirPods afterward to check if the problem is solved.

    8. Reconnect Your AirPods.

If you still experience problems with your AirPods, we recommend unpairing them and then pairing them back.

This should refresh the link between your devices, ensuring that your AirPods are connected properly.

Here’s what you need to do:

    1. Put your AirPods in the charging case and close the lid.
    2. Now, wait for 30 seconds.
    3. After that, put your AirPods on your ears.

Can’t figure out why the trackpad is not working on your MacBook?

MacBooks have class-leading trackpads which feature swipe gestures that help you navigate macOS and scroll through pages conveniently.

Despite its overall functionality, MacBook’s trackpads aren’t entirely flawless.

Like other laptops, you can encounter all sorts of issues, like lags or the pointer not moving.

    trackpad not working on MacBook

In this guide, we’ll show you what to do if the trackpad on your MacBook is not working.

    Let’s get started!

    1. Clean the Trackpad.

Before changing your configurations, try cleaning your trackpad first. Oils and debris can accumulate on your trackpad, making it harder for your MacBook to detect touches.

Grab a clean microfiber towel and dampen it with a little isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe the trackpad’s surface to remove smudges.

Try using the trackpad again to check if the problem is solved.

    2. Restart Your MacBook.

A simple restart might be what your MacBook needs to get the trackpad working again.

Restarting your system reloads your resources, resolving temporary errors that may have occurred during use.

This also clears the system memory, removing unused and corrupted data.

Here’s how you can restart your MacBook without using the trackpad:

    1. Press Control + Command + Power button on your keyboard.
    2. Wait for your MacBook to boot.

    Try using the trackpad again.

    3. Force Restart Your MacBook.

If restarting your MacBook did not work, try performing a restart. This restarts your MacBook at a hardware level by cutting off power from the battery.

Follow the steps below to guide you through the process:

    1. Press and hold the Power button on your MacBook until the screen shuts off.
    2. Now, wait for 5-10 seconds
    3. Turn on your MacBook again by pressing the Power button

Use the trackpad to see if it responds.

    4. Reset NVRAM (Intel Macs).

If your MacBook is still using an Intel processor, try resetting its NVRAM (non-volatile random-access memory). This is a small amount of memory on your system that stores certain settings.

Follow the steps below to reset NVRAM:

    1. First, make sure that your MacBook is fully turned off. You can hold down the Power button until the screen shuts off.
    2. After that, turn on your Mac and immediately hold the Option + Command + P + R keys
    3. After 20 seconds, release the keys, and your Mac should restart.

Once done, check if your trackpad works.

    5. Reset System Management Controller.

The System Management Controller or SMC is tasked to handle power distribution on your Mac.

Resetting the SMC can resolve issues related to power or thermal management. It can also fix other hardware-related problems.

If your MacBook’s trackpad is not responding, try resetting the System Management Controller.

    MacBook w/ Apple Silicon:

    1. Make sure that your MacBook is plugged into a charger.
    2. Now, shut down the device by holding the Power button for a few seconds.
    3. Turn on your MacBook normally.

    MacBook w/ T2 Chip:

    1. Turn off your MacBook
    2. On the keyboard, press and hold Control + Option + Shift keys together with the Power button
    3. Keep holding all keys for another 7 seconds and release them. Turn on your Mac normally.

    MacBook w/o T2 Chip:

    1. Make sure that your MacBook is turned off.
    2. On your keyboard, press the Shift + Control + Option keys together with the Power button
    3. Continue holding all keys for 10 seconds. Release the keys afterward and turn on your Mac normally.

Proceed to the next solution if the trackpad on your MacBook still doesn’t work.

    6. Boot in Safe Mode.

If the issue persists, try booting your MacBook in safe mode. This helps us identify whether the problem is caused by third-party applications you’ve installed.

For Apple silicon-based Macs, here’s how you can restart it in safe mode:

    1. Access the Apple Menu on your Mac and choose Shut Down
    2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely.
    3. Next, hold the Power button on your Mac until the “Loading Startup Options” page shows up.
    4. Choose a volume.
    5. Hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click Continue in Safe Mode

If you’re using an Intel-based Mac, here’s what you need to do:

    1. Access the Apple Menu on your Mac and choose Shut Down
    2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely.
    3. Now, turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Shift key
    4. Release the Shift key once you see the login window.
    5. Follow the prompts to log in to your Mac.

    Note

You can check if your Mac is in Safe Mode by doing the following:

    1. Hold the Option key and click on Apple Menu > System Information
    2. Next, click on Software on the sidebar.
    3. Find the Boot Mode section, and the value should be Safe

Head to the next solution if your MacBook’s trackpad works in safe mode.

    7. Update Your Mac.

If your trackpad works in safe mode, use it to update your MacBook’s software.

The version of macOS you’re using might have an underlying issue that prevents your trackpad from functioning.

Here’s what you need to do:

    1. In the upper left corner of your screen, click the Apple icon to open the Apple Menu
    2. Now, click on System Settings
    3. Inside settings, navigate to General > Software Update
    4. If a new version is detected, follow the prompts to install the update.
    trackpad not working on MacBook

    Note

    • Your Mac can restart several times while installing the update.
    • The update progress bar might also appear to be stuck. When this happens, don’t do anything. Software updates can take several minutes to complete.

Once done, boot your MacBook normally to check if your trackpad works.

    8. Uninstall Recently Installed Apps.

Third-party applications could also be the reason your trackpad doesn’t work. Go back to safe mode and try uninstalling recently installed applications on your MacBook.

Check out the steps below to delete apps on your MacBook:

    1. Boot in safe mode and open Finder
    2. Now, open the Applications folder
    3. Identify the apps you’ve installed before the issue occurred.
    4. To delete an app, click on it and drag it to the Trash
    5. Repeat the process until you’ve removed all recently installed apps.

Boot your MacBook normally to check if the problem is solved.

    9. Visit the Apple Store.

If none of the solutions above worked, we recommend that you bring your MacBook to the nearest Apple Store

    trackpad not working on MacBook

You might be dealing with a hardware issue, and your MacBook’s trackpad needs to be replaced.

Before heading to the store, check if your MacBook is still covered by warranty to know your repair options.

If you had your MacBook for less than 14 days, you can still return it for a refund or replacement, provided that you purchased your device directly from Apple.

That ends our guide for fixing the trackpad if it’s not working on your MacBook.

Do you see a ‘can’t use your Apple ID on this device’ message when signing in to your Apple ID?

Apple ID is supposed to simplify Apple’s ecosystem by providing you with a universal account to use on all your devices.

However, it defeats its purpose if you can’t add your Apple ID to your device.

If you are seeing a ‘cant use your Apple ID on this device’ message, we got you covered.

Today, we’ll show you everything you need to know about this problem.

    Let’s get started!

Why Are You Seeing This Error?

There are a few reasons why you can’t use your Apple ID. However, it is likely that you have any of these enabled for your account:

    Account Recovery Contact

If the error message mentions macOS 12.0 or iOS 15.0, the issue lies with your account recovery contact.

This is used to recover your Apple account when you forget your password or device passcode.

You won’t be able to sign in with your Apple ID if your device doesn’t meet the following:

    • Two-factor authentication is enabled on your device
    • You are 13 years old or older
    • Your device must be running iOS 15 or later, watchOS 8 or later, or macOS Monterey or later

    Advanced Data Protection

If you see iOS 16.2 or macOS 13.1 in the error message, it means that the problem is caused by advanced data protection for your Apple ID.

Advanced Data Protection is a security feature on iCloud that protects your files using end-to-end encryption.

The following conditions must be true to use your Apple ID on your device:

    • Two-factor authentication is enabled for your Apple ID and trusted devices
    • Your device must be running at least iOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, and watchOS 9.2.

How to Fix ‘Can’t Use Your Apple ID’ Error on iPhone?

    1. Check Apple’s Servers.

If you can’t add your Apple ID to your iPhone, there’s a chance that Apple’s servers are experiencing problems.

To confirm this, head to their system status page to check if there are reported problems with the service.

can't use your apple id on this device

Unfortunately, server-related issues can’t be solved on your end. If the servers are offline, the best thing to do is wait for their team to fix the problem.

    2. Restart Your Device.

Try restarting your device if you keep seeing the ‘can’t use your Apple ID’ error message. This should reload your system resources, resolving temporary errors in the process.

Restarting your device also clears corrupted and unused data from the system memory.

For older models, follow the steps below:

    1. Locate the Power button on your device.
    2. Now, hold the button until the ‘Slide to Power Off’ prompt shows up.
    3. Drag the slider to the right and wait 30 seconds before turning on your device.

For Mac users, follow the guide below:

    1. Click on the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
    2. Next, choose Restart from the drop-down menu.
    3. When prompted, click Restart to confirm your action.
    Restart Mac

Try adding your Apple ID again to check if the problem is solved.

    3. Check Your Network Connection.

Slow or unstable internet connection could also cause problems with Apple ID verification.

To rule this out, run a speed test on your network using Fast.com to measure its current bandwidth.

    Fast.com

If the result indicates a problem with your connection, power cycle your modem or router to re-establish the connection with your ISP.

    1. Disconnect your router’s power cable from the outlet.
    2. Wait for at least five seconds.
    3. Reconnect the power cable and wait for your modem/router to initialize.
    Restart Router

Rerun the test afterward to check if the problem is solved. If the issue persists, contact your provider and ask them to fix their service.

    4. Update Your Device.

As mentioned above, your iPhone or Mac must be running compatible versions of iOS for security features to work.

If your device is using an old OS, you won’t be able to use your Apple ID with advanced data protection or active recovery contact.

Follow the steps below to update your iPhone:

    1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
    2. Navigate to General > Software Update
    3. If there’s a new iOS version available, tap Download and Install
    4. Once the new software is ready, follow the prompts to install the update.
can't use your apple id on this device

    Note

    • Your device can restart several times while installing the update.
    • Make sure that your iPhone has at least 50% battery before installing updates. It’s best to keep your device plugged into the wall charger to avoid interruptions.
    • Allow at least 15 minutes for the update to install, especially if it’s a major update (iOS 14 to iOS 15).

Here’s how you can update your Mac:

    1. In the upper left corner of your screen, click the Apple icon to open the Apple Menu
    2. Now, click on System Settings
    3. Inside settings, navigate to General > Software Update
    4. If a new version was detected, follow the prompts to install the update.

    Note

    • Your Mac can restart several times while installing the update.
    • The update progress bar might also appear to be stuck. When this happens, don’t do anything. Software updates can take several minutes to complete.

Once done, sign in with your Apple ID to check if the problem is solved.

    5. Disable Advanced Data Protection.

If you don’t want to update your device, you can simply disable advanced data protection on your Apple ID.

Here’s how you can do that:

    1. Go to your iPhone or iPad, where your Apple ID is currently signed in.
    2. Now, open Settings
    3. Tap on your Profile and go to iCloud
    4. Find Advanced Data Protection and disable it.

Return to your other device and try logging in to your Apple ID again.

    6. Remove Account Recovery Contact.

Another feature that could be preventing you from using your Apple ID on a device with older software versions is account recovery contact.

Here’s how you can remove recovery contacts on your Apple ID:

    1. Grab your iPhone or iPad where your Apple ID is signed in.
    2. Next, go to the home screen and launch Settings
    3. Tap on your Profile
    4. Navigate to Password & Security > Account Recovery
    5. Select the name of the person you want to remove and tap Remove Contact

Once done, try to use your Apple ID on your other device.

    7. Reset All Settings (iOS Users).

For your last option, try resetting your iPhone’s settings if you still can’t sign in to your Apple account. This will ensure that your device configurations are correctly set.

See the steps below to reset your iPhone’s settings:

    1. On your iPhone, go to the main menu and open Settings
    2. Now, tap on General
    3. Look for Transfer or Reset iPhone and tap on it.
    4. Tap the Reset option and select Reset All Settings

    1. Follow the prompts to continue.

    Note

    • Your iPhone will immediately restart upon resetting your network configurations.
    • It may appear to be stuck in the Apple logo. Wait for the process to complete, which usually takes around 5 to 10 minutes.

Afterward, sign in with your Apple ID to check if the problem is solved.

That ends our guide for fixing the ‘can’t use your Apple ID on this device’ error.

Do you see a “failed to get service status” error on ChatGPT?

Interest in AI has surged higher than ever, thanks to the likes of ChatGPT and Midjourney. A vast majority of users seek to experience services provided by AI.

However, since its release, ChatGPT has been showing server issues due to the volume of users it gets.

One common error you can get from the platform is the “failed to get service status” message. This error occurs in the chat box and prevents you from asking questions to the AI.

chatgpt failed to get service status error

To help out, we’ve decided to make a guide for fixing this error message on ChatGPT.

    Let’s get started!

    1. Refresh ChatGPT.

If you see the “failed to get service status” error on ChatGPT, try refreshing the website first.

This allows your browser to reload ChatGPT, ensuring that a random connection interruption did not cause the problem.

Hit F5 on your keyboard or click the Refresh button near the URL box to reload the web page.

    2. Check ChatGPT Status.

As mentioned, ChatGPT has been encountering server-related problems since it was released.

If you get an error message on the platform, it’s possible that the servers are offline. There might also be a lot of people currently using ChatGPT, causing the servers to crash.

To confirm this, you can visit OpenAI’s status page to check if there are reported problems with the AI.

chatgpt failed to get service status error

Sadly, server-related issues can’t be resolved on your end. If the servers are down, the best thing to do is wait for their team to address the problem.

    3. Restart Your Computer.

Restarting your computer can help identify whether an issue with your system causes the problem.

This reloads your system files, ensuring that they are initialized properly. A system restart also clears the RAM (Random Access Memory), removing corrupted data from your apps.

If you’re using Windows, here’s what you need to do:

    1. Click the Windows icon on the Taskbar.
    2. In the Start Menu, access the Power Options tab.
    3. Choose Restart and wait for your system to reboot.
    Restart PC

For Mac users, follow the steps below:

    1. Access the Apple Menu by clicking the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen.
    2. Now, choose Restart from the drop-down menu.
    3. When prompted, confirm your action by clicking Restart again.
    Restart Mac

Once done, go back to ChatGPT to check if the “failed to get service status” error is solved.

    4. Check Your Network Connection.

A slow or unstable network could also be the reason you are seeing error messages on ChatGPT.

To rule this out, run a test on your network using Fast.com to measure its bandwidth.

    Fast.com

If you are not getting the correct speeds indicated in your monthly plan, restart your modem or router to refresh your connection.

    1. Unplug your router from the outlet.
    2. Wait for 5 to 10 seconds.
    3. Plug back in the power cable and wait for your router to initialize.
    Restart Router

Perform another test afterward to check if the problem is solved. If the issue persists, contact your service provider and ask them to fix your connection.

    5. Turn Off VPN.

If ChatGPT is experiencing problems, using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on your device won’t help.

VPNs work by masking your IP address and redirecting your traffic to their servers.

While this is great for security, it can affect the quality of your connection. This makes it even harder for your browser to communicate with ChatGPT’s servers.

Disable any VPN you have before using ChatGPT.

    6. Change DNS.

You can try changing your DNS (Domain Name Server) if you still encounter the “failed to get service status” error on ChatGPT.

DNS is an integral part of the Internet since it interprets server addresses to understandable domain names like Google.com, Facebook.com, and more.

If your service provider is having minor issues, changing your DNS should allow you to continue using the internet.

For Windows users, follow the steps below:

    1. Open the Start Menu by clicking the Windows icon on the Taskbar
    2. Next, look for View Network Connections and open it.

    • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
    1. Once done, click OK and close the window.

If you’re using a Mac, here’s what you need to do:

    1. Open Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
    2. Go to System Settings
    3. Click on Network in the sidebar, then click on Network Services
    4. Now, click on Details and scroll down until you see DNS
    5. Access the DNS tab and click the + icon on the pop-up window.

    1. Add these values:
    • Google DNS: 8.8.8.8

    1. Click OK to save the changes.

Go back to your browser and see if ChatGPT works.

    7. Update Your System.

Software-related issues can also affect your network connectivity. To be sure, check if there are available updates for your system and install them.

This should patch potential bugs or errors on your system that cause the error.

For Windows users, follow the guide below to update your system:

    1. Press Windows + I on your keyboard to open Windows Settings
    2. Go to Update & Security (Windows 10 only).
    3. Now, click on Windows Update in the side menu.
    4. Click on Check for Updates and follow the prompts.
    Update System

If you’re using a Mac, here’s what you need to do:

    1. In the upper left corner of your screen, click the Apple icon to open the Apple Menu
    2. Now, click on System Settings
    3. Inside settings, navigate to General > Software Update
    Software Update
    1. If a new version is detected, follow the prompts to install the update.

    Note

    • Your Mac can restart several times while installing the update.
    • The update progress bar might also appear to be stuck. When this happens, don’t do anything. Software updates can take several minutes to complete.

Once done, try using ChatGPT again to check if the problem is solved.

    8. Wait It Out.

If none of the solutions above worked, it’s possible that ChatGPT encountered a problem, and OpenAI isn’t aware of it yet.

Try using the AI again after 2-3 hours and see if you’ll encounter the same error.

Contact OpenAI’s team if the problem continues for more than 24 hours to see if the issue is on their end.

chatgpt failed to get service status error

You should see a chat box on the right side of their page where you can speak with a representative.

That sums up our guide for fixing ChatGPT if you encounter the “failed to get service status” error.

Is your webcam not working on Zoom?

Zoom is one of the most popular video conferencing apps in the world alongside Google Meet.

But this does not exempt Zoom from occasional errors. One complaint that we regularly see from users is their webcam not working during calls.

    Webcam Not Working On Zoom

This can be annoying since it renders the video conferencing app useless.

To help out, we’ve decided to make a guide for fixing your webcam if it’s not working on Zoom.

Is your MacBook stuck on the Apple logo and won’t boot?

When your MacBook gets stuck on the Apple logo, it usually indicates a problem with the operating system.

    macbook stuck on apple logo

An error may have occurred during software updates, causing some files to corrupt.

It may also be due to improper shutdowns, buggy third-party applications, and improper configurations.

Today, we’ll show you how to get your MacBook to boot properly.

    Let’s begin!

    1. Check For Faulty Peripherals.

Your MacBook may not be booting due to peripheral devices you’ve installed. Remove all external devices on your Mac and boot it in safe mode.

Here’s what you need to do:

    1. Hold the Power button until the ‘Loading startup options’ prompt appears.
    2. Now, choose a Volume
    3. Press and hold the Shift key and click Continue in Safe Mode

If your MacBook successfully boots in safe mode, connect one external device and restart it.

Repeat this process until the problems start occurring again. When this happens, remove the last device you’ve plugged in.

This is what causes your MacBook to get stuck in the Apple logo.

    2. Use Disk Utility.

If you recently updated your MacBook and it won’t boot, there’s a chance that some resources were not installed properly.

Luckily, macOS has a software utility that automatically checks and repairs broken system files.

Follow the steps below to use Disk Utility on your Mac:

    1. To start, identify whether your Mac is using Apple silicon or Intel. Follow the steps below afterward:
    • Apple Silicon Mac – Hold the Power button until you see the startup options window.
    • Intel Mac – Turn on your Mac and press Command + R until you see the Apple logo.
    1. Select your user account and click Next
    2. Provide your password when prompted.
    3. On the Utilities window, click on Disk Utility and click Continue
    Disk Utility
    1. Finally, click First Aid and choose Run
    Run First Aid

Wait for your MacBook to complete the scan and it should automatically repair errors on your drive.

Restart your computer afterward to check if it will boot normally.

    3. Reset NVRAM (Intel Macs).

Clearing your NVRAM can also help solve booting issues on your MacBook.

NVRAM is a small memory on your Mac that stores certain system settings. Some of these settings may have gotten corrupted, preventing your Mac from booting up.

Here’s how you can reset your NVRAM:

    1. First, make sure that your MacBook is fully turned off.
    2. After that, turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Option + Command + P + R keys
    3. After 20 seconds release the keys and your Mac should restart.
    macbook stuck on apple logo

Boot your Mac normally and check if it will still get stuck on the Apple logo.

    4. Check Power Cable and Charger.

If your MacBook shows the Apple logo and shuts off immediately, it’s possible that it just ran out of battery.

To confirm this, try charging your MacBook for a few minutes and see if it will turn on.

You should also check if the outlet is working. Try plugging in other devices to see if they will work.

Inspect the charging cable and adapter for damages, exposed wires, and bent pints. If your charger is the problem, head to the nearest Apple Store to buy a genuine charger.

Head to the nearest Apple Store if you’ve confirmed that your charger is the problem and buy a replacement.

    Note

We strongly suggest using genuine chargers on your MacBook to avoid damaging the battery.

    5. Perform A Force Startup.

If you had your MacBook for a while, there’s a chance that the power button is starting to malfunction.

If the power button is stuck, your MacBook won’t boot up and will just cycle through the Apple logo.

Give it a few wiggles after turning on your MacBook or lift it up to ensure that it is not stuck.

You can also perform a force startup by holding Power + Function + Control + Command on your keyboard.

    6. Reset System Management Controller.

System Management Controller or SMC is tasked to manage the power of your Mac.

Resetting your MacBook’s SMC can solve problems related to power, boot, and thermal management.

Once done, your MacBook should boot up and the issue should be resolved.

    7. Reinstall macOS.

If your MacBook is still stuck on the Apple logo, there might be an issue with the operating system.

In this case, it’s best to reinstall macOS on your MacBook to ensure everything’s in order.

Here’s what you need to do:

    1. First, connect your MacBook to your network using a network cable.
    2. Now, hold the Power button until your MacBook’s screen turns black.
    3. Press and hold the Command + R keys on your keyboard and turn on your Mac
    4. Release the keys once the Apple logo appears.
    5. Lastly, select Reinstall macOS on the Utilities window and follow the prompts.
    macbook stuck on apple logo

Once done, set up your MacBook and you are good to go.

    9. Contact Apple.

If none of the solutions above worked, we recommend that you bring your MacBook to the nearest Apple Store

Recently, we’ve seen users complaining about an ExtensionKit error 15 on Apple Community.

    com.apple.extensionkit.errorDomain error 15 on Mac

This error prevents them from accessing Apple’s core services, including their Apple ID and iCloud. While some even had errors accessing Internet Accounts in Settings.

To help out, we’re going to show you effective ways to solve this error code on your Mac.

    Let’s dive right in!

    1. Restart Your Mac.

Whenever you encounter issues on your Mac, you can first try to give it a restart.

This should reload your system resources, resolving temporary errors that may have occurred during use.

Restarting your device should also clear corrupted app data from its memory.

Here’s how you can restart your Mac:

    1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen.
    2. Now, choose Restart from the drop-down menu.
    3. When prompted, click Restart again to confirm your action.
    Restart Mac

Try accessing online services afterward to check if the problem is solved.

    2. Check Apple Servers.

A problem with Apple’s servers could also trigger the “com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain Error 15” on your Mac.

Visit Apple’s status page and see if there are outages with the services you’re trying to access.

    com.apple.extensionkit.errorDomain error 15 on Mac

Sadly, server-related errors can’t be resolved on your end. If the servers are offline, the best thing to do is wait for Apple’s team to address the issue.

On the other hand, you can head to the next step if Apple’s servers are functional.

    3. Update Your Mac.

The macOS version you’re using might have an issue preventing your Mac from connecting to Apple’s services.

To rule this out, check for system updates and install the latest version of macOS.

Follow the steps below to update your Mac:

Once done, observe if you’ll still encounter the ExtensionKit error 15.

    4. Refresh Your Apple ID Data.

You can try signing out your Apple ID on your Mac and adding it after a few minutes.

This should refresh your Apple ID, ensuring no issues with your data and account information.

Here’s what you need to do:

    1. On your Mac, access the Apple Menu and go to System Settings
    2. Now, click on your name on the sidebar.
    3. Choose Sign Out
    Sign Out Apple ID
    1. Follow the instructions to continue.
    2. After 5 to 10 minutes, add your Apple ID to your Mac.
    3. Restart your system.

Try accessing settings or any online service to check if the problem is solved.

    5. Run Console.

After some research, we’ve found a workaround that lets you access the settings page that triggers the ExtensionKit error.

This only works if the error occurs when accessing certain settings, and you’ll have to do it every time.

See the steps below to guide you through the process:

    1. Open Finder on your Mac.
    2. Now, go to Applications > Utilities
    3. Double-click on Console to launch it.
    com.apple.extensionkit.errorDomain error 15 on Mac
    1. Inside the Console, click the Start button in the menu bar.
    com.apple.extensionkit.errorDomain error 15 on Mac
    1. Go to the settings page you need to access.

Head to the next solution if this doesn’t work for you.

    6. Boot in Safe Mode.

Starting your Mac in safe mode helps identify whether the problem you’re experiencing is caused by software that loads as your Mac starts.

If the ExtensionKit error 15 doesn’t occur in safe mode, check recently installed applications on your Mac.

Try removing recently installed apps on your Mac if the error code doesn’t occur in safe mode.

    7. Terminal Workaround.

Here is another workaround that many users confirmed working on their end. This requires running a few commands in the Terminal, but the process is straightforward.

    Note

Make sure to save all your work since you’ll need to restart your Mac.

Follow the steps below to try it on your end:

    1. Press Command + Space on your keyboard to open Spotlight Search
    2. Look for Terminal and hit Return to open the app.
    com.apple.extensionkit.errorDomain error 15 on Mac

    mkdir ~/Desktop/backupjunk

    mv ~/Library/Application\ Support/iCloud/Accounts/* ~/Desktop/backupjunk
    1. Restart your Mac.
    2. Open FaceTime. This should save and view your internet accounts.
    3. Launch Terminal again and run this command:
    sudo shutdown -r now

Once done, you should be able to access online services and settings on your Mac.
