Wondering how to fix error ‘0x8007065E: Data of this type not supported’ on your PC?

There you are, sitting in front of your computer, preparing to get started on your daily tasks. Your operating system notifies you about installing the latest updates and with a heavy heart, you head to the Updates section. You click on the pending updates to install them and – Beep! Blip! Buzz! – error code 0x8007065E appears on your screen.

Experiencing errors while installing the latest Windows updates is nothing new for Windows users.

The error code ‘0x8007065E: Data of this type not supported’ is typically caused by system file corruption and mostly occurs in Windows 7. If you are facing it too, then you are in the right place.

In this guide, we will walk you through the relevant troubleshooting steps in detail, so that you can get your system back on track in no time.

Let’s get started.

1. Fix SoftwareDistribution Folder.

In most cases, corrupt installer files in the SoftwareDistribution folder cause error code 0x8007065E.

An easy way to fix this issue is by renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder and then installing the updates again. This will force Windows to recreate the folder, thus resolving the error in the process.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Click on the Windows icon and type cmd in the search bar.
  2. Click on Run as administrator to launch Command Prompt with administrative privileges.
  3. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands mentioned below one and hit Enter after each for execution.
NET STOP WUAUSERV
Error 0x8007065E
REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
Error 0x8007065E
NET START WUAUSERV
Error 0x8007065E
  1. Now, wait for at least 15 minutes before restarting your computer. Once your system is restarted, wait another 10 minutes. Now navigate to Windows Updates to check for the pending updates.

If corrupt files in the SoftwareDistribution folder were causing the issue, then following the steps mentioned above will hopefully resolve the issue.

2. Rerun the Failed Updates.

It is common for temporary bugs and glitches to prevent you from performing the desired functions. Fortunately, these issues are easy to fix, and most of the time a simple restart or refresh will do the trick.

Several users were able to fix the issue by rerunning the failed updates, which is why we encourage you to give it a shot.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Click on the Windows icon on the taskbar and type Control Panel in the search bar. Hit Enter to launch Control Panel.
  2. Inside the Control Panel window, click on View update history and check for failed updates.
Error 0x8007065E
  1. If you find any failed updates, install them manually one by one.

Hopefully, this will fix the error code at hand.

3. Disable Windows Firewall.

If you have Windows Defender Firewall or any other third-party security program installed on your PC, there is a high possibility that it is causing the error.

Overly protective security applications may block legitimate users from carrying out certain tasks and therefore cause the problem. If this applies to your case, then temporarily shutting down the security programs will solve the problem.

Once you have performed the desired task successfully, you can enable them back on Windows.

Below we have outlined the steps to disable the Windows Firewall. Although the steps for performing the same function may differ between third-party applications, the basic concept remains the same.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Click on the Windows icon on the taskbar and type Control Panel in the search bar. Hit Enter to launch Control Panel.
  2. Inside the Control Panel window, select System and Security.
  3. Now select Windows Defender Firewall and click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off from the left panel.
Error 0x8007065E
  1. Click on the bubble next to Turn off Windows Firewall (not recommended) and hit OK to save the changes.
  2. Now try installing the updates again and check if the issue is resolved.

If Windows Defender Firewall was causing the error at hand, disabling it will allow you to install the updates without any issues.

4. Try Using CleanMyPC.

You may also encounter errors like code 0x8007065E with bugs and or viruses caused by corrupt files. If Method 1 did not work for you, then decluttering your PC using a reputable PC cleaner can resolve the issue.

A PC cleaner detects and fixes corrupt or damaged files on your computer, including those located in the Windows Registry, without the user having to take any action. However, it is crucial the PC cleaner you use is able to perform these advanced functions.

For those who have trouble finding an effective cleaner, we recommend CleanMyPC.

Install CleanMyPC on your PC

CleanMyPC’s system-maintenance tools enable you to fix even the most complex computer problems. You simply need to install the software and run the scan. The rest will be taken care of!

If this is something your PC is in desperate need of, install CleanMyPC now and give your PC a much-needed performance boost.

 Try CleanMyPC Now!

5. Run SFC and DISM Scans.

As we discussed above, the error can occur due to corruption errors within the system.

Luckily, Windows comes with several built-in troubleshooting utilities that scan the operating system, identify the issues, and resolve them with little to no user input. Two such utilities are System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) tool. Both of these are command-line tools, which means that you can use them via Command Prompt.

Here is how you can run SFC and DISM scans on your PC:

  1. Type cmd in the search bar and click on Run as administrator
  2. In elevated Command Prompt, type the command listed below and hit Enter to execute it.
sfc /scannow
SFC command DISM
  1. Once the command is executed, restart your PC and check if the error is resolved. If not, then open the elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. This time, type the command mentioned below and hit Enter
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restore Health Command
  1. Finally, restart your PC again.

Hopefully, this will resolve the issue once and for all.

This wraps up our guide on fixing the error code 0x8007065E in Windows. We hope that one of the methods mentioned in this guide did the trick for you. If you have any questions regarding the methods listed above, please let us know in the comment section below.

Wondering how to back up and restore the Registry on Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11?

If you always have wanted to get better control of your operating system, then you most likely already know about the Windows Registry.

Windows Registry is the heart of the way Windows works. It is like a large database that your operating system’s functions and other programs rely on to get relevant, essential information they need to perform their duties.

When a new program is installed on your operating system, a set of new instruction files are added to the Registry which your operating system can refer to, later. Similarly, when you change your desktop background, the changes are stored in the Registry Editor. And the changes you make to a particular file’s name – yep, they are stored in the Registry too.

If you wish to make some administrative-level changes in your operating system, Windows Registry allows you to do so. Fortunately, the entire process is quite simple, as we have discussed in several of our previous posts. However, since Windows Registry is an essential part of the operating system, even the slightest error can wreak havoc in Windows.

To ensure that you do not damage the Registry editor, it is best to create a backup. In this guide, we will show you how you can do so in Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11.

Let’s get started!

1. Export the Registry Hive.

Before we jump into the steps of exporting the Registry hive, it is important to know that your Registry is automatically backed up when you create a System Restore point.

Let’s say you created a system restore point a week ago and restored your system today. In that case, your Windows Registry will revert to the state it was a week ago.

If you want to create a Registry backup manually, here is what you need to do:

  1. Press Windows + R keys simultaneously on your keyboard to open a Run dialogue box.
  2. Type ‘regedit‘ in the text field of the dialogue box and hit Enter. This will open Windows Registry on your PC.
  1. Once you are inside the Registry Editor, click on Computer as shown below. This way, you will create a full backup of the entire Registry.
Back Up and Restore the Registry

Note: In case you want to back up only a specific Registry key, then select it instead of selecting Computer.

  1. Now click on File and then select Export from the list of options available. Make sure that the key you want to backup is selected while you do so.
Back Up and Restore the Registry
  1. Navigate to the location where you want to save the backup in the next window and rename the backup file.
  2. Finally, click Save to save the changes you just made.
Back Up and Restore the Registry

You now successfully have created a backup of your Windows Registry.

2. Try Using CleanMyPC.

It is common for Registry hives to get corrupt at times. This typically happens when you make changes in the Registry Editor.

If your operating system is not working properly after you experimented with the Registry Editor, you can either restore the Registry or use a Registry Cleaner to get rid of the corrupt files. In case you do not want to restore Windows Registry, try using CleanMyPC.

Install CleanMyPC on your PC

CleanMyPC is a one-stop shop for all your PC-related needs. It comes with an extensive list of maintenance tools including a Registry Cleaner. All that you need to do is install the tool and run a scan using it. CleanMyPC will identify all the potential issues and fix them with little to no user input.

Install CleanMyPC and get your computer up and running like new!

3. Restore the Registry Using Backup.

There are times when your system starts acting up after you modify Registry keys or values. Worry not, because now is the time you get rewarded for thinking ahead about creating a backup.

Restoring Windows Registry to a previous point in time only takes a few minutes.

Here is all that you need to do:

  1. Press Windows + R keys simultaneously on your keyboard to open a Run dialogue box.
  2. Type ‘regedit‘ in the text field of the dialogue box and hit Enter. This will open Windows Registry on your PC.
  3. Once you are inside the Registry Editor, click on File and select Import from the list of options available.
  1. In the next window, navigate to the location where you saved the backup and click on the backup file.
  2. Hit Open.

That’s it.

This should restore your Registry to its previous state.

This wraps up our guide on backing up and restoring Windows Registry. We hope that the methods mentioned in this guide did the trick for you. If you still have any questions about the steps, feel free to let us know in the comment section below.

Wondering how to enable or disable System Restore in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10?

The System Restore feature in Windows allows you to restore your PC to an earlier point in time. Its working is similar to the ‘Undo’ feature in most applications. This feature allows Windows to restore important files and settings, including drivers, registry keys, system files, and installed software, to their previous versions and settings.

It works by creating a snapshot of your PC’s working system so that if anything goes wrong in the future, you can restore it back to its previous state. In other words, if strange things happen to your computer after installing certain software, you might find that performing System Restore will resolve the issue since it will restore the system back to its original state.

Additionally, this feature is highly customizable, which means you can enable or disable it on your Windows according to your preferences.

In this guide, we will show you how you can do that in a few simple steps.

Let’s get started!

1. Use Windows Registry.

Windows Registry is an administrative-level tool designed for advanced users to help them control their operating system better. The Registry stores low-level information about Windows programs and processes. Windows refers to this information while performing relevant operations.

The information in Windows Registry is stored in the form of Registry keys. By modifying the relevant Registry keys, we can make desired changes.

In this method, we will modify the keys related to System Restore. We recommend executing the steps mentioned below carefully, as even a slight mistake can cause serious issues within the Registry.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Press Windows + R keys simultaneously to open a Run dialogue box.
  2. In the text field of the dialogue box, type ‘regedit‘ and hit Enter. This will open Windows Registry on your PC.
  1. Once you are inside the Registry Editor, navigate to the location mentioned below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
  1. Right-click in the right pane and select the New > DWORD (32-bit) Value option.
  2. Rename this newly created value as DisableSR and double-click on it.
  3. To disable System Restore, type 1 under Value data, and to enable it, type 0
Enable or Disable System Restore in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10
  1. Finally, hit Enter and restart your PC.

This should enable/disable System Restore without any issues.

2. Try Using CleanMyPC.

There are times when junk files in our operating system prevent us from performing certain operations. In the case that the methods in this guide do not work for you, your junk files can be the culprit.

If this is the case, we recommend removing junk files from your PC before implementing the methods we have listed.

However, identifying all the junk files and deleting each one individually is a difficult process. This can take up lots of time and energy, which is why a reliable PC cleaner is recommended. CleanMyPC is one of the top recommendations if you are on the lookout for one.

Install CleanMyPC on your PC

CleanMyPC is one of the most popular PC cleaning utilities on the market. You can use it to keep your computer in great shape. This tool comes with a large variety of system maintenance tools including a Speed Booster, a Registry Cleaner, a Multi-Uninstaller, and more.

To get started, download and install CleanMyPC on your computer. The tool will take care of everything else!

Try CleanMyPC Now!

3. Use Group Policy Editor.

If Windows Registry did not do the trick for you, then you can try using the Group Policy Editor.

Group Policy Editor (GPE) is also an administrative-level utility that allows users to customize the operations of their operating systems. Information in GPE is stored in the form of policies, and by modifying the relevant policies, you can make the desired changes.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Press Windows + R keys on your keyboard simultaneously to open a Run dialogue box.
  2. Inside the text field of the dialogue box, type ‘gpedit.msc‘ and hit Enter. This will launch the Group Policy Editor on your PC.
  1. In the newly launched window, navigate to the location mentioned below.
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\System Restore
Enable or Disable System Restore in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10
  1. In the right pane, locate and double-click on Turn off System Restore.
Enable or Disable System Restore in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10
  1. Select Enabled or Disabled according to your preference and hit Apply to save the changes.
  2. Once done, restart your PC.

Hopefully, using the Group Policy Editor will allow you to enable/disable System Restore without any issues.

This brings us to the end of our guide on ways to enable or disable System Restore in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. We hope that one of the methods mentioned in this guide helped you make the required changes. If you still have any questions regarding the methods, please let us know in the comment section below.

Fix: 'The Requested Resource Is In Use' on Windows 10 or 7

This error occurs when:

  • Another program occupies the application or program you are trying to move/open.
  • Your PC has been infected with a rootkit known as SmartService.

The error messages can be of the following three types.

  • Error Copying File or Folder: The requested resource is in use.
  • [Drive] is not accessible. The requested resource is in use.
  • [Path] The requested resource is in use.

While the first reason does not seem to be too much of a problem, the second reason definitely is. A rootkit is a software that allows a malicious user to have full control over your computer. It can damage your computer, and your private information can be gathered as well.

This guide will walk you through the process of fixing the ‘The Requested Resource is in Use” error on Windows 10 or 7 in detail.

Let’s get straight into it.

Find yourself updating Windows 10 but instead receive Windows Update error code 0x80070422?

Windows 10 is a great operating system. It has a nice, clean look to it and usually operates smoothly. However, errors can occur especially when updating Windows.

An example of a common Windows Update error is ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’. So what does this error code mean?

windows update error code 0x80070422

This error code is thrown when attempting to update Windows 10. The error code 0x80070422 is short for ‘Self Update Failure Software Synchronization Windows Update Client failed to detect with error’.

Just like you, other users have reported having the issue as well on their machines.

Thankfully, there are multiple methods we can try to attempt to fix the ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’. Hopefully, after following these methods today, you will fix the error code on your machine. 🙂

Let us begin!

1. Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

The first method we will try using is running the Windows Update Troubleshooter. We will use the troubleshooter to potentially fix the ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’.

The Windows Update Troubleshooter will search for errors with Windows Update and if it locates any, then it will fix them for us.

Here’s how you can run the Windows Update Troubleshooter on your machine:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘control.exe /name Microsoft.Troubleshooting’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x80070422

3. Once the Windows Troubleshooter appears on your screen, you should see Windows Update under Get up and running. Simply click on Windows Update. Then, click on Run the troubleshooter.

windows update error code 0x80070422

Note ⚠

If for some reason you are on Windows 7 or Windows 8, then you should see Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security instead. Therefore, click on Fix problems with Windows Update.

Once you see the Windows Update Troubleshooter appear on your screen, run it.

After the Windows Update Troubleshooter is done running, it will tell you whether or not it found any errors and if it was capable of fixing them. If it found an error regarding Windows Update, then attempt to install the Windows update again.

2. Resetting the Windows Update Component.

One reason why you may be receiving this error code may have to do with the Windows Update components being bugged.

Therefore, we should try resetting the Windows Update components. Hopefully, after resetting the components, the error will be fixed! 😀

To reset the Windows Update components, follow the following steps below:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘cmd’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x80070422

3. Once you’re in the Windows Command Prompt, type in the following commands in the same order and press the Enter key:

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

Note ⚠

Typing in these commands will stop the Windows Update services, Cryptographic services, BIT services, and the MSI services from running. We must stop these services to fix the potentially corrupted Windows Update directories.

4. After disabling those services, type in these following commands within the Windows Command Prompt and press the Enter key:

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

Note ⚠

The two files you renamed are used by Windows Update when updating your machine. These two files could then be possibly corrupted. Since these two files are used by the operating system, you can’t just delete them. Therefore, we are renaming them. After renaming them, Windows will make new versions of the files.

5. Once you have renamed those two files, we can now restart all the services we stopped earlier with the following commands:

net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Windows Update should now create new versions of those two files we renamed. If these files were the reason why Windows was refusing to update, then this should fix our problem now.

Now attempt to update Windows again. If you’re still receiving the error code, then proceed to the next step.

3. Enabling the Windows Update Service.

If you have tried the other methods above and still are unable to update Windows, then it may have to do with the Windows Update service not running.

Without the Windows Update service running, Windows will be unable to update your computer!

Luckily, enabling the Windows Update service (if not already enabled) is easy to do.

Follow these steps below to enable the Windows Update service:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘services.msc’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x80070422

3. Once the Services window is visible on your screen, you should see Windows Update near the bottom of the list. Simply right-click on Windows Update. Then, click on Properties.

4. Next, click on the Combo Box where it says Startup type. Then, select Automatic in the list.

5. Lastly, start the service if it is stopped.

windows update error code 0x80070422

Note ⚠

If the Windows Update service is already running, then Restart it instead.

Now that you have started the Windows Update service, try to update Windows again. If you still are receiving ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’, then proceed to the next step.

4. Restarting the Network List Service.

Another reason why Windows is refusing to update may have to do with the Network List Service not working as intended.

The Network List Service is responsible for identifying and collecting data regarding the networks your computer is connected to. When these properties change, the Network List Service then notifies all applications connected to a network of the given changes.

Therefore, we should try restarting the Network List Service.

Here’s how you can restart the Network List Service:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘services.msc’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x80070422

3. Once the Services window is visible on your screen, you should see Network List Service near the middle of the list. Simply right-click on Network List Service. Then, click on Restart.

Note ⚠

If the Network List Service isn’t already running, then Start it instead.

After you have restarted the Network List Service, attempt to update Windows again. Are you still receiving the ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’? Then, proceed to the next step.

5. Running a System File Checker Scan and DISM.

Windows Update may be attempting to access files that have been renamed, are corrupted, or are missing. This could then be the reason why you are receiving the ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’ on your machine.

Thankfully, we can easily locate and repair these missing, corrupted, or renamed files by using two of Windows built-in tools.

The first tool is known as ‘Windows System File Checker’ or SFC for short. SFC is capable of locating missing, renamed, or corrupted files on your computer’s hard disk and repairing them.

The second tool is known as ‘Deployment Image Servicing and Management’ or DISM for short. DISM will replace corrupted Windows files on your machine with healthy versions of them. Windows keeps healthy, cached versions of files by using ‘Windows Images’.

Because SFC is capable of locating files and folders that have been modified, or corrupted, we will then be using it today along with DISM to hopefully fix the ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’.

To run an SFC scan and DISM on your machine, follow the following steps below:

How to Run an SFC Scan

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘cmd’ and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter (as shown below).

3. Once Windows Command Prompt opens as Administrator, type in the following command and press the Enter key:

sfc /scannow

Note ⚠

When running an SFC scan, Windows will replace corrupted files with non-corrupted versions of them. This way the files will no longer be corrupted. Since this command will actively search your machine and replace system files, it is advised to not interrupt the service at all when it is running (such as shutting off your computer). Doing so could potentially corrupt more files on your machine, or corrupt Windows in general.

4. After running the SFC scan, simply Restart your computer.

After your computer restarts, attempt to update Windows again. If Windows updates successfully, then you don’t need to run DISM.

If after running an SFC scan and Windows will not update still, then you need to run DISM.

How to Run DISM

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘cmd’ and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter (as shown below).

3. Now that you have re-opened the Windows Command Prompt as an Administrator, type in these additional commands and press the Enter key:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Note ⚠
When running DISM, it will connect to the internet. So if you have a slow connection, it may take a while to finish running the command.

4. Once DISM has finished running, Restart your computer one last time.

Now that your computer has rebooted, try to update Windows again.

Is Windows still showing you the ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’? Then, proceed to the next step.

6. Temporarily Disabling IPv6.

IPv6 is the latest version of the Internet Protocol. The protocol is responsible for identifying computer networks and rerouting internet traffic.

However, as reported by some users, Windows 10 has had issues when using the IPv6 protocol.

Thus, we should try temporarily disabling IPv6 on our machine. There is a good chance this will fix the Windows Update error! 😀

To temporarily disable IPv6 on your machine, simply follow the following steps below:

  1. Go to the bottom left of your taskbar and click on the Windows logo.
  2. Then, type in ‘Control Panel’ (as shown below).

3. Next, click on Control Panel.

4. The Control Panel menu should now appear. At the very top left of the list, click on Network and Internet.

Note ⚠

If you do not see Network and Internet, then just skip Step 4 and move on to Step 5.

5. Now click on Network and Sharing Center. It should be the first item in the list.

6. Once the window appears, click on the network you are connected to next to Connections.

windows update error code 0x80070422

7. Next, click on the Properties button near the bottom left of the pop-up window.

windows update error code 0x80070422

8. In that list, simply uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).

Now that you have temporarily disabled the IPv6 protocol, try updating Windows again. If Windows updates now, great!

After Windows has updated, you can now enable the IPv6 protocol again following the same steps above. However, instead of disabling it, you would be re-enabling it.

7. Performing a Clean Install.

After trying every other method in this article, you may feel like you are out of luck. Well, not necessarily!

Thankfully, for Windows 10, Microsoft has a tool you can download that allows you to manually update Windows 10 (and as well as install Windows 10). This ‘tool’ is referred to as the Media Creation Tool.

While this tool does rely on particular services running on your computer, it also uses its very own services. So there is a good chance this will bypass the Windows Update error code and update your machine for you!

windows update error code 0x80070422

To update your computer manually, simply download the tool from Microsoft’s website and run it. Then, choose to ‘Update this PC now’.

This wraps up our guide on how to fix the ‘Windows Update error code 0x80070422’. If you know of any other solutions that were not mentioned in this article, then graciously share them in the comment section below. Once we were to update this article again, you would be credited for your feedback. 😄

Trying to upgrade from an older version of Windows to Windows 10, but find yourself receiving Windows Update error code 0x8007045b instead?

Just about all of us Windows 7 or Windows 8 users have seen that notification telling us to upgrade to Windows 10. While many of us didn’t upgrade, others have promptly decided to leave Windows 7 or 8 and try for a new experience in Windows 10.

Nonetheless, you were one of those people who decided to upgrade to Windows 10.

Perhaps now it may seem like it was a mistake. When upgrading to Windows 10, you received the error code 0x8007045b. But what does the error code mean exactly?

‘Windows Update error code 0x8007045b’ is commonly encountered when upgrading to Windows 10, from either Windows 7 or 8, or when installing important Windows updates (on any version of Windows). The error code 0x8007045b means either a system file is corrupted (that Windows Update needs to access), an antivirus has interrupted the Windows Update process, or a glitch has occurred entirely in the Windows Update application when updating or upgrading Windows. The error code is short for ‘ERROR_SHUTDOWN_IN_PROGRESS’.

This error code is widely known, as many other people have reported the error occurring on their machines. Therefore, you’re not alone in receiving this error.

Luckily, there are many different ways to fix the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007045b’. In this guide, we will show you various methods you can follow to fix this error happening on your machine.

Let us begin! 🙂

1. Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

The Windows Troubleshooter is effective in fixing common errors that occur on Windows. The troubleshooter can detect well-known errors with Windows applications (including Windows Update) and 3rd party software.

Before we try any other method in this article, we should first try running Windows Troubleshooter on our machine in hopefully fixing the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007045b’.

To open Windows Troubleshooter, simply follow the following steps below:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘control.exe /name Microsoft.Troubleshooting’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x8007045b

3. Once the Windows Troubleshooter is visible on your screen, you should see Windows Update under Get up and running. Simply click on Windows Update. Then, click on Run the troubleshooter.

windows update error code 0x8007045b

Note ⚠

If you are on Windows 7 or Windows 8, then you should see Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security instead. Therefore, click on Fix problems with Windows Update.

Now you should see the Windows Update troubleshooter appear on your screen. If the troubleshooter doesn’t run automatically, then run it.

After the Windows Troubleshooter is done running, it will tell you whether or not it found any errors and if it was capable of fixing them. If it found an error regarding Windows Update, then attempt to install the Windows update again.

2. Resetting the Windows Update Component.

Possibly the reason why Windows is refusing to upgrade and giving us this error code may have to do with the Windows Update application being bugged.

Therefore, we should try resetting the Windows Update components. Doing so will refresh the Windows Update application. 😀

Here’s how you can reset the Windows Update components using Windows Command Prompt:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘cmd’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x8007045b

If these files were the reason why Windows was refusing to upgrade or update, then this should fix our problem now.

Now attempt to upgrade or update Windows again. If you’re still receiving the error code, then proceed to the next step.

3. Temporarily Disabling Your Antivirus.

While antivirus software protects our machines from many types of malware, ransomware, spyware, and other harmful software, they also pose a problem to Windows applications.

Sometimes antivirus software can get in the way and block certain applications from doing specific tasks on Windows. One example of these applications is Windows Update.

However, what if you don’t have any antivirus software? Well, if you encountered this error when updating Windows 10, then Windows 10 has its own built-in antivirus called ‘Windows Defender’. And yes, even Microsoft’s own antivirus can conflict with Windows Update.

Therefore, we should try temporarily disabling our antivirus and then attempt to upgrade (or update) Windows again.

Follow these steps below to disable your antivirus:

If you are on Windows 10 and use Windows Defender

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + S. This will bring up the Search Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘Windows Security’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x8007045b

3. Once Windows Defender opens, click on Virus & threat protection on the left side of the application.

4. Then, click on the button under Real-time protection to disable Windows Defender.

windows update error code 0x8007045b

Now that Windows Defender is disabled, try installing the Windows update again.

If you were able to update Windows, then you may now re-enable Windows Defender following the same method above.

If you are on Windows 7, 8, or 10, and use your own antivirus

  1. Go to the bottom right of your taskbar where the System Clock is located.
  2. Then, Right-Click your antivirus. From there you should see a Disable button.
  3. Now, click on the Disable button (as shown below).

Most antivirus software (Avast, AVG, Norton, ESET, and so forth) can be disabled this way. However, if you were unable to find your antivirus software on your taskbar, or there wasn’t an option to disable it, then you could try googling how to disable your particular antivirus.

Now try to upgrade or update Windows again. Afterward, you may re-enable your antivirus. To re-enable it, follow the same method provided above. Instead of disabling it, you should have an option to re-enable your antivirus.

4. Running a System File Checker Scan and DISM.

If a file Windows Update is trying to access has been renamed or is missing, then that could be the reason for the error.

Thankfully, Windows has two built-in tools that are useful when repairing missing or renamed files on Windows and correcting them. These two tools are known as ‘Windows System File Checker’ (SFC for short) and ‘Deployment Image Servicing and Management’ (DISM for short).

SFC’s job is to locate missing or corrupted files on your computer’s hard disk and repair them.

Whereas DISM will replace corrupted Windows files on your machine with healthy versions of them. Windows keeps healthy, cached versions of files by using ‘Windows Images’.

Since SFC and DISM can repair missing, corrupted, or renamed files on our machine, we will then be using them today to potentially fix the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007045b’.

Here’s how you can run an SFC scan and DISM on your machine:

After your computer restarts, do what was done in steps 1 and 2 again.

5. Now that you have re-opened the Windows Command Prompt as an Administrator, type in these additional commands and press the Enter key:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Note ⚠
When running DISM, it will connect to the internet. So if you have a slow connection, it may take a while to finish running the command.

6. Once DISM has finished running, Restart your computer one last time.

After your computer has rebooted, try to upgrade or update Windows again.

Is Windows still showing you the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007045b’? Then, proceed to the next step.

5. Upgrade or Update Windows Through Clean Boot.

Another method we could try doing is upgrading or updating Windows through a clean boot.

A clean boot is when you boot up your system with all startup programs and services disabled. Only the minimal services and drivers necessary for Windows to operate will start up in a clean boot state.

Maybe this is the only method required in fixing the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007045b’ on your machine! 😀

To learn how to boot up your computer in a clean boot, go to this guide.

After booting up your computer in a clean boot, try to upgrade or update Windows again.

6. Performing a Clean Install.

If you have tried every other method in this article, then there is one last option you could try.

And that option is resetting your PC to factory settings and installing Windows 10.

While this option will wipe out your computer’s hard disk and install Windows 10 through a fresh install, this is guaranteed to fix the error code being thrown.

If you are ready to begin a clean install, then go to this guide.

Do you find yourself trying to update Windows, but instead receive error code 0x8007010b?

Updating Windows can sometimes be a struggle. Windows tells you there is an update available, so then you update your computer. But then the update fails, or Windows Update tells you the update was installed when in reality it wasn’t.

In a previous article from us, we discussed how to fix the ‘Windows Update error code 8020002E’. Well, today we are going to teach you how to fix another Windows Update error, and that is ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’.

windows update error code 0x8007010b

‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’ is typically thrown when Windows is updating your machine or when Windows Task Scheduler is running. So what does the error code mean? If you received error code 0x8007010b, then it means Windows attempted to access a directory that no longer exists or the name of the directory is invalid. The error code is short for ‘ERROR_DIRECTORY’.

If you encountered this error, then you’re not alone. Other Windows users have reported their encounters with this error also.

Not being able to update Windows and becoming behind on security updates makes your system vulnerable to viruses, trojans, and other sorts of dangerous malware. Therefore, today we will provide you with various methods you can use to fix the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’ on your machine. 😀

Let us begin!

1. Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Windows Troubleshooter is a useful tool when attempting to resolve errors that occur on Windows. The Windows Troubleshooter is especially efficient in fixing particular errors with Microsoft’s applications, which includes Windows Update.

Since Windows Troubleshooter is capable of fixing errors with Windows Update, we will use it first today in hopefully fixing the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’.

To open Windows Troubleshooter, follow the following steps below:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘control.exe /name Microsoft.Troubleshooting’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x8007010b

3. Once the Windows Troubleshooter is visible on your screen, you should see Windows Update under Get up and running. Simply click on Windows Update. Then, click on Run the troubleshooter.

windows update error code 0x8007010b

Note ⚠

If you are on Windows 7 or Windows 8, then you should see Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security instead. Therefore, click on Fix problems with Windows Update.

After completing the steps above, the Windows Update troubleshooter should now appear on your screen. If the troubleshooter asks you to run it, then do so.

The troubleshooter will now run and possibly detect the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’ you have been receiving. If it did detect an error and fixed it, then try to install the Windows update again.

2. Resetting the Windows Update Component.

This error code doesn’t necessarily have to do Windows Update, but rather a directory missing or named differently on your computer that Windows Update is trying to access.

However, there is a potential chance that this error does have to do with Windows Update, in that one of Windows Update’s directories is missing or has been renamed.

So it doesn’t hurt to reset the Windows Update component. Maybe this will fix the issue! 🙂

Follow these instructions to reset the Windows Update component using Windows Command Prompt:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘cmd’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x8007010b

We must stop these services in order to fix the potentially corrupted Windows Update directories.

4. After disabling those services, type in these following commands within the Windows Command Prompt and press the Enter key:

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

Note ⚠

The two files you renamed are used by Windows Update when updating your machine. While this error is thrown when a directory is missing or renamed, these two files could still be possibly corrupted.

After restarting the services we stopped earlier, Windows Update will create new versions of those files. This may, potentially, fix the error code we have been attempting to fix.

Now try installing the Windows updates again. If they still won’t install, then proceed to the next step.

3. Manually Install the Update.

If you have tried the other methods above and you’re still out of luck, then we could try manually downloading and installing the update.

In order to manually download and install Windows Updates, it is generally pretty simple. So let’s try it! 🙂

Doing this will involve us grabbing the update’s ‘ID’ then searching for it on Microsoft’s Update Catalog.

To update Windows manually, follow the following steps below:

If you are on Windows 10

  1. Go to the bottom left of your taskbar and click on the Windows logo.
  2. Then, type in ‘Settings’ (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x8007010b

3. Next, click on Settings.

4. The Settings application should now be visible. At the very bottom of the list, click on Update & Security.

windows update error code 0x8007010b

5. Your available update should now be visible. Write down or copy the KB number next to your visible update.

6. Now, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for that KB number.

7. Once you have searched for that number, Sort the page by Last Updated. Then, look for your update on the list and click on the Download button on the right-hand side of the page.

8. A pop-up window should now appear. Click on the Link provided in that window and Download the file to a location on your computer.

Now once you have manually downloaded the update file, simply run the file and install the update. If you have other updates that won’t install due to the error as well, then do the same for them too.

If you are on Windows 7 or 8

  1. Go to the bottom left of your taskbar and click on the Windows logo.
  2. Then, type in ‘Control Panel’ (as shown below).

windows update error code 0x8007010b

3. Next, click on Control Panel.

4. The Control Panel menu should now appear. At the very top left of the list, click on System and Security.

Note ⚠

If you do not see System and Security, then just skip Step 4 and move on to Step 5.

5. Now click on Windows Update. Then, you should see ‘Ximportant updates are available or ‘Xoptional updates are available. Depending on what your update is, click on either of the two.

6. From here you can see your available updates for your computer. Next, click on the Update you have been having trouble installing. Then, write down or copy the KB number next to your visible update on the right-hand side of your screen.

windows update error code 0x8007010b

7. Now, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for that KB number.

8. Once you have searched for that number, Sort the page by Last Updated. Then, look for your update on the list and click on the Download button on the right-hand side of the page.

9. A pop-up window should now appear. Click on the Link provided in that window and Download the file to a location on your computer.

Once you have manually downloaded the update file, run the file and install the update. Make sure to do the same for other updates that are also available and won’t install due to the error.

4. Running a System File Checker Scan and DISM.

One way we can find the missing or renamed files on our computer, that Windows Update is trying to access, is by using two of Windows built-in tools.

The first built-in tool is known as ‘Windows System File Checker’, or also known as SFC for short.

So what can SFC do exactly? SFC is capable of searching your computer’s hard disk and locating missing or corrupted files. It will then repair those files it deems are corrupted.

The second tool is called DISM, short for ‘Deployment Image Servicing and Management’. DISM will fix corrupted Windows files by using a Windows Image that already exists on the system. Essentially, it will replace corrupted files with healthy versions of them.

Because SFC is capable of locating files and folders that have been modified, or corrupted, we will then be using it today along with DISM to hopefully fix our ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’.

To run an SFC scan and DISM on your machine, follow the following steps below:

Now that your computer has rebooted up, attempt to install the update again.

If Windows is still throwing the error ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’, then proceed to the next step.

5. Install the Update Through Clean Boot.

So you have tried every other method in this article and Windows is still refusing to update. Now what?

Well perhaps there is another method we could try, and that is booting up our computer in a clean boot.

When booting up a Windows computer in a clean boot, all startup programs and services will be disabled. Windows will then boot with the minimal drivers necessary in order for it to function properly.

Hopefully from booting up our computer in clean boot, the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’ will go away! 😀

To learn how to boot up your computer in a clean boot, go to this guide.

This sums up our guide on how to fix the ‘Windows Update error code 0x8007010b’. Know of any other solutions that were not mentioned in this article? Then kindly share them in the comment section below! Whenever we update this article again, we will credit you for your feedback.

So you’re trying to install an important Windows update, but then you receive error code 8020002E? Now what?

Windows is a great operating system. Most applications are designed to be run on Windows unlike other operating systems, such as macOS. Unfortunately, Windows isn’t always perfect and has led users down a road of tough situations.

One tough situation is trying to update Windows. Whenever there is a Windows update, it may feel like a gamble. A gamble of whether or not Windows will update instead of outputting an error.

An example of a common error is ‘Windows Update error code 8020002E’. Multiple Windows users have complained about receiving this error. But what does this error mean?

If you’ve received error code 8020002E, then it could mean a variety of things. Examples include a corrupt Windows Update file, a strict antivirus blocking Windows from updating, or Windows Update becoming stuck in a ‘frozen’ state.

Since keeping Windows up to date is important, today we will show you how to fix the ‘Windows Update error code 8020002E’ on your machine. The methods we will provide you with today have been thoroughly tested by us and many other users. Therefore, they are guaranteed to work! We will also include pictures, that way you can easily follow along. 🙂

Let us begin!

1. Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Sometimes the easiest way in fixing issues with Windows is using the built-in Windows troubleshooter. The Windows Troubleshooter is capable of fixing many of Windows services. Examples include Windows Update, internet, audio, printers, and Bluetooth.

Therefore, the first fix we should try is using the Windows Troubleshooter. This may just be the only solution required to fix the ‘Windows Update error code 8020002E’! 😀

To launch Windows Troubleshooter, simply follow the following steps below:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘control.exe /name Microsoft.Troubleshooting’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 8020002E

3. Once the Windows Troubleshooter appears on your screen, you should see Windows Update under Get up and running. Simply click on Windows Update. Then, click on Run the troubleshooter.

windows update error code 8020002E

Note ⚠

If you are on Windows 7 or Windows 8, then you should see Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security instead. Therefore, click on Fix problems with Windows Update.

Now the Windows Update troubleshooter window should appear. Simply let it run. If it finds any issues with Windows Update, then the troubleshooter will fix them for you automatically.

If the troubleshooter found an error, then great! It probably detected the ‘Windows Update error code 8020002E’ we have been trying to troubleshoot for. Now go back and try to install the Windows update again.

If the Windows Troubleshooter did not find any issues with Windows Update, then proceed to the next step.

2. Temporarily Disabling Your Antivirus.

Antivirus software is a great source of protection against harmful software, websites, and other services.

Most Windows machines require them, as Windows constantly has issues with malware and other sorts of viruses. Windows even has a built-in antivirus called ‘Windows Defender’.

However, sometimes antivirus software can get in the way and prevent certain applications from working properly.

That’s where Windows Update comes in. Some users have reported that their antivirus software had prevented Windows from updating their machines.

So we should try temporarily disabling our antivirus, and then try to install the Windows update. Depending on what antivirus you may have, there are different steps for each antivirus.

If you don’t have any antivirus and just use Windows Defender, then follow the following steps below to temporarily disable it:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + S. This will bring up the Search Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘Windows Security’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 8020002E

3. Once Windows Defender opens, click on Virus & threat protection on the left side of the application.

4. Then, click on the button under Real-time protection to disable Windows Defender.

windows update error code 8020002E

Now that Windows Defender is disabled, try installing the Windows update again.

If you were able to update Windows, then you may now re-enable Windows Defender following the same method above.

If you use your own antivirus instead, then they’re different steps for each antivirus.

Here is a common method, that works for most antivirus software, in disabling your antivirus:

  1. Go to the bottom right of your taskbar where the System Clock is located.
  2. Then, Right-Click your antivirus. From there you should see a Disable button.
  3. Now, click on the Disable button (as shown below).

If your antivirus didn’t give you an option to disable it, then you could try googling how to disable your specific antivirus. But most antivirus software (Avast, AVG, Norton, ESET, and so forth) can be disabled this way.

Now that you’ve disabled your antivirus, try updating Windows again. After updating Windows, you may re-enable your antivirus. To re-enable it, follow the same method provided above. Instead of disabling it, you should have an option to re-enable your antivirus.

3. Disconnecting from a Proxy Server and VPN.

If you are connected to a proxy server and/or VPN, then perhaps this could be preventing you from installing Windows updates.

The reason for this may have to do with an insecure proxy server or VPN, or slow connection.

So we should try disconnecting from our proxy server and/or VPN if we are connected to one.

First, we will discuss how to disconnect from a proxy server.

This method here is guaranteed to work for Windows 7, Windows 8, and of course Windows 10:

5. Now click on Internet Options. It should be the second item in the list.

6. Once the popup appears, click on the Connections tab.

7. Next, click on the LAN settings button near the bottom of the tab.

8. If Use a proxy server for your LAN checkbox is checked, uncheck it.

windows update error code 8020002E

Now that you have temporarily disconnected from your proxy server, try updating Windows again. If Windows updates now, great!

After Windows has updated, you can now enable your proxy again following the same steps above. However, instead of disabling it, you would be re-enabling it.

Now we will show you how to disconnect from a VPN if you’re connected to one:

If you are on Windows 10

  1. Go to the bottom left of your taskbar and click on the Windows logo.
  2. Then, type in ‘Settings’ (as shown below).

windows update error code 8020002E

3. Next, click on Settings.

4. The Settings application should now be visible. At the very top right of the list, click on Network & Internet.

windows update error code 8020002E

5. On the left-hand side, click on VPN.

6. Then, click on your VPN.

7. Lastly, click on the Remove button.

After removing your VPN, you will now be disconnected from it. Now try to update Windows again. If you were successful in updating Windows, then you can now re-add your VPN by following the same steps before. However, this time you will click on Add a VPN connection instead and then add your VPN back.

windows update error code 8020002E

If you are on Windows 7 or 8

  1. Go to the bottom left of your taskbar and click on the Windows logo.
  2. Then, type in ‘Control Panel’ (as shown below).

windows update error code 8020002E

3. Next, click on Control Panel.

4. The Control Panel menu should now appear. At the very top left of the list, click on View network status and tasks under Network and Internet.

Note ⚠

If you do not see Network and Internet, then click on Network and Sharing Center instead.

5. Now click on Connect or disconnect. From here you will be able to disconnect from your VPN.

Once you have removed your VPN, you will be disconnected from it. Now try to update Windows again. If you were successful in updating Windows, then you can now re-add your VPN by following the same steps before. However, this time you will click on Setup a new connection or network instead and then add your VPN back.

4. Resetting the Windows Update Component.

If you have tried the other steps above and Windows Update is still giving you the error, then it may have to do with Windows Update being corrupted.

Luckily, we can easily fix Windows Update with a few commands in the Windows Command Prompt.

Here’s how you can fix Windows Update using Windows Command Prompt:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘cmd’ and press the Enter key (as shown below).

windows update error code 8020002E

This is a crucial step in fixing the corrupted Windows Update files.

After fixing the potentially corrupted files used by Windows Update, try installing the Windows updates again.

Windows Update still outputting the error code? Then, proceed to the next step.

5. Running a System File Checker Scan.

If you have tried every other method so far above, and Windows Update is still broken for you, then all hope isn’t lost! There may be other corrupted files, on your machine, that is preventing Windows Update from installing updates. 🙂

Thankfully, Windows has a built-in tool when it comes to checking your hard disk for errors.

This built-in tool is the ‘Windows System File Checker’, also known as SFC for short. SFC can detect corrupted files on your hard disk and repair them for you. Useful right?

Therefore, we will be using it today to potentially fix Windows Update and allow it to install updates.

To run an SFC scan on your machine, follow the following steps below:

  1. On your computer, press Windows Key + R. This will bring up the Run Dialogue.
  2. Then, type in ‘cmd’ and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter (as shown below).

windows update error code 8020002E

After your computer restarts, do what was done in steps 1 and 2 again.

5. Now that you have re-opened the Windows Command Prompt as an Administrator, type in ‘DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth’ and press the Enter key.

Note ⚠
When running DISM, it will connect to the internet. So if you have a slow connection, it may take a while to finish running the command.

6. Once DISM has finished running, Restart your computer one last time.

After your computer has finished restarting again, check to see if Windows is capable of installing updates again.

If Windows is still unable to install updates due to the ‘Windows Update error code 8020002E’, then proceed to the next step.

6. Install the Update Through Clean Boot.

After trying every other method listed in this article, it may seem like you’ve hit a dead in. But not necessarily!

Perhaps the reason why Windows Update won’t update still has to do with conflicting applications and services running on startup.

For instance, these applications and services may be accessing files Windows Update is trying to update.

So in order to allow Windows Update to update your machine, we may need to disable the application or service that is the culprit of the issue.

Since tons of applications and services run on startup, we will need to run a clean boot on Windows. When running a clean boot on Windows, it will disable all startup programs and services, and run with the minimal drivers required in order to run Windows safely. So if any application or service was causing the ‘Windows Update error code 8020002E’, then now it should go away. 😀

windows update error code 8020002E

Follow this guide in order to go into a clean boot. Once you’ve started your computer in clean boot, attempt to update Windows again.

This wraps up our guide on how to fix ‘Windows Update error code 8020002E’. If you know of any other solutions that were not mentioned in this article, then graciously share them in the comment section below. Once we were to update this article again, you would be credited for your feedback.
